What is a VoIP telephone system and how does it work?

VoIP stands for Voice over Internet Protocol. Essentially it’s a technology that allows you to have a telephone conversation over the internet via your broadband connection. It’s been around since the early days of the internet, but now it’s really come of age. It’s used by an increasing number of businesses to drive down their telephone costs. Skype is a consumer VoIP service (also used by some very small businesses) that has popularised VoIP over the last 5 years.

Which calls are free on VoIP?

Not all calls are free when you use VoIP, but even the ones that are not free are considerably cheaper. If you connect with another VoIP user via the internet without the call ever touching the conventional phone system then the call will be free. So for example you can make internal calls to other offices or home workers for free provided the system is set up correctly. A VoIP user can also connect to people on the conventional telephone network just by dialling their number in the normal way. The call is then routed through the internet to the persons normal line (mobile or land line). For those calls, VoIP service providers must pay access fees to the landline and wireless operators. Those charges are passed along to VoIP customers.

Do I need any conventional telephone lines?

You will need a broadband service and that runs on a normal analogue line. A single broadband line will enable you to make multiple simultaneous calls – it’s not 1 line for 1 call. You do not necessarily need to rent expensive ISDN lines. After all the monthly rental of broadband lines is considerably cheaper than ISDN lines, plus many of the calls will be cheaper or free. However in some geographic areas the internet connection may not be reliable enough to use broadband 100% of the time for making calls. In this case it is better to have some conventional ISDN lines as they are very reliable. However you will not need as many so you will still save money.

Why does VoIP save my business money?

The main savings are in line rental and telephone call charges. But you will also save money running the telephone system. One broadband connection will replace many expensive ISDN lines as you can put many calls simultaneously through a broadband line. This is usually the biggest monthly saving.

Telephone call changes are less because some of your calls to other VoIP users will be free and telephone calls to conventional land lines and mobiles will be cheaper too. Because the VoIP system runs on a Windows PC it is cheaper and easier to support and maintain the hardware each year. We will do it all for you

Isn’t VoIP just the same as Skype?

No, but Skype is the VoIP system that popularised the use of the internet to make calls. It doesn’t have the features that a small to medium sized business would need, but it’s great for consumers and micro business. The system we supply works in the same way, but it’s a business grade fully featured system.

How good is the sound quality on this phone system?

Sound quality is usually very good. It’s not quite as crystal clear as a copper telephone line, but most people would be hard pressed to tell the difference. You do need a good quality broadband connection and provided you can get that in your area the quality will be good. Broadband services are improving very rapidly, so it’s only a matter of time before all areas will have very good VoIP connections.

Why are the handsets so much cheaper than the old telephone systems?

The old telephone systems like Nortel, Panasonic, etc were totally proprietary. That meant that one manufacturers handset wouldn’t work with another. This meant you were locked into buying handsets from the manufacturer of your telephone exchange. Not surprisingly with this kind of monopoly prices were high. Internet phones all work to the same agreed standard. This is known as the SIP protocol. Therefore you can in theory purchase any SIP phones – competition has driven down the cost of handsets to less than £100.

Can I use ISDN lines and VoIP together on the one phone system?

You can connect both VoIP and ISDN lines to the telephone system that we supply. This means that you can choose which route the calls go out via. Prefix your call with 9 for the BT network or 7 for internet calls. If you mix a few ISDN lines with VoIP you will have a more resilient reliable system. We will advise you on this and set it all up for you.

Can remote offices and home users use a VoIP system?

Yes, the home user can have an office phone at home and be part of the office telephone network with voicemail, call hold, transfer, etc, just as if they were in the office. The caller will never know – unless they hear the baby crying or the dog barking in the background! The same applies to linking different offices. If they are all linked via the internet calls will be absolutely free as well.

What’s included in your FREE telephone system audit?

An small business telephone system looks at how a modern telephone system could to improve improve your internal efficiency and customer service the operation. We also examine your telephone costs to find out how much money you could save on maintenance, telephone lines and call charges.
